¿Es que todavía hay quienes dudan de que Sherlock Holmes fue una persona real?”
Probablemente lo tenga todo. Una obra fresca e inteligente. El brío para no detenerse, la curiosidad para no aburrirse, el talento para llevarlo a cabo, la afición y las ganas inagotables. Por tener, tiene hasta un maestro en quien fijarse y editoriales comprensivas, tolerantes y creativas. Lo cuenta a continuación.
Su última carcajada sigue los presupuestos del pulp captar, con urgencia, la atención del lector y no soltarla. En este sentido, es muy significativo que esté narrado en presente…
Tiene su explicación, ya que siempre he creído firmemente que todo artista, sin importar la disciplina que cultive, tiene un margen muy corto para captar la atención del público, y una vez conseguido esto, la responsabilidad de mantenerla encendida.
Es curioso que comiences justamente con eso, puesto que yo mismo desconocía que escribía con ese estilo, hasta que algunos lectores me lo hicieron saber. En Su última carcajada quise llevar esa creencia a la práctica, manejando la acción en tiempo presente para ubicar al lector en la misma situación que sus personajes. Me gusta creer que eso ayudó a crear una especie de complicidad y acercamiento entre ambos.
La Gran Guerra…
… fue una época muy interesante, un despertar brutal y violento de la modernidad, cuyos ecos se siguen percibiendo en nuestros días más de cien años después.
El libro comienza con la narración de la última gran y desesperada batalla de la Primera Guerra Mundial.
Algo que muy pocos saben es que esa historia surgió originalmente como un relato con el que participé en una convocatoria organizada por la editorial NeoNauta, cuyo eje central eran historias ambientadas en la Primera Guerra. En ese entonces, mis conocimientos acerca de esa época eran muy limitados y no iban más allá de lo que aprendí en las clases de historia de la escuela.
Pues ese primer capítulo es todo un reportaje, realismo puro…
Bueno, me puse a la tarea de investigar y estudiar todo lo que el tiempo de la convocatoria me permitió. No negaré que fue algo muy gratificante y que, si mis descripciones de esos eventos, que fueron lo más apegado a la realidad que me permitieron mis habilidades, resultan del agrado del lector, es debido a la calidad de las fuentes que consulté.
La I Guerra Mundial o la última guerra librada con armas, más o menos convencionales…
Eso es algo cierto a medias. En los campos de batalla antiguos se desataron horrores tecnológicos como el fuego griego, e incluso armas biológicas, como los cuerpos infectados con peste bubónica que eran arrojados con catapultas por sobre las murallas de las ciudades. El más siniestro rostro de la inventiva ha estado siempre presente en los conflictos armados.
Por otro lado, me parece, aunque puedo estar en un error, que los ejércitos europeos se acostumbraron mucho a la forma de pelear que se estableció durante las Guerras Napoleónicas, lo que convirtió las tradicionales cargas de infantería en escalofriantes carnicerías por causa de las ametralladoras y otros dispositivos militares. Algo similar a lo ocurrido en la Edad Media cuando las armaduras quedaron obsoletas frente al uso de arcabuces y mosquetes.
De lo que no parece caber duda es que no fue una guerra de gentlemen
La Primera Guerra significó el fin de las guerras románticas, si es que el término puede aplicarse en este contexto, pues a partir de ella los conflictos se volvieron fríos, mecánicos y sistemáticos, sin mucho margen para la caballerosidad o el honor.
No quiero que se me malinterprete, las guerras siempre han sido terribles, pero pocos negaran que tras la de 1914 estas han alcanzado cuotas de espanto inimaginables, que 27 años después nos conducirían a los horrores radioactivos de Hiroshima y Nagasaki.
¿Por qué se inició la Gran Guerra?
En los libros de texto se nos dice, al menos así era cuando iba al colegio, que la guerra se inició por el asesinato del archiduque Francisco Fernando de Austria. Sin embargo, eso es tirar a lo fácil. Para que la guerra estallará de la forma en que lo hizo, antes tuvo que haber toda una infraestructura bélica dispuesta a ello, que cada país involucrado echó a andar varios años antes. Las razones para ello las desconozco, y puede que nunca las sepamos en realidad. Lo que sí me queda bastante claro, es que la Gran Guerra comenzó porque muchos la estaban esperando, incluso desando.
¿Y por qué no se paró?
El por qué no se paró tras los sangrientos resultados de las primeras batallas es algo todavía más misterioso para mí. Los líderes de los países en conflicto eran parientes en cierto grado, o al menos tenían ancestros en común, lo que hace más increíble que no fueran capaces de hallar una salida diplomática.
Sólo veo dos posibilidades: o no querían parar, o no podían hacerlo. No sé cuál de las opciones me inquieta más dado el clima geopolítico internacional de hoy en día.
Le cito: “Los demonios que el hombre no puede sujetar”. Ese es, en definitiva, el tema del libro…
Eso creo también. Quizá los más terribles sean aquellos que se revisten de otra piel y no revelan su verdadera naturaleza hasta que ya es demasiado tarde. Pienso en los demonios liberados por el patriotismo sacado de toda proporción, los que se liberan de la ciencia, de la técnica y la industria cuando estas se ponen al servicio de la guerra o de los obscuros designios de sujetos con poder.
No hay un solo demonio…
No, en Su última carcajada hay muchos demonios libres, y, en contra de lo que el lector podría esperar, no todos se pueden detener siempre. Es más, apresar a uno de esos demonios puede significar la liberación de uno más terrible. No recuerdo quién dijo la frase: “este mundo tenía que ser el infierno de otro”, pero muchas veces, más de las que me gustaría admitir, no me queda más que darle la razón.
Demonios, avances tecnológicos … los descubrimientos de científicos como Pressbury, Jekylll o Frankenstein permiten “elaborar” un supersoldado…
Es algo muy interesante, ¿no es verdad? Los personajes que mencionas, todos ellos anteriores a la guerra, tienen algo en común, el uso de la ciencia para elevar al hombre sobre su condición natural, algo que, a pesar de sonar bien, en la realidad, al menos la literaria, lleva siempre al desastre.
Pressbury se valió de una especie de ingeniería genética primitiva para recobrar la juventud, Jekyll empleó la química para suprimir el mal de su alma y Frankenstein recurrió al galvanismo para burla a la muerte. Tal como dijo Goya en una ocasión: “el sueño de la razón crea monstruos”. ¿Y qué mejor lugar para ellos que los campos de batalla, donde su monstruosidad no es algo aborrecible, sino por el contrario algo deseable? ¿Qué dice eso sobre nosotros?
Y frente a esos demonios se oponen un grupo de héroes sacados de todas las épocas. Su manera de escribir, de hacer pastiches, viene de Philip Jose Farmer, de las teorías de World Newton…
Nunca faltan esos héroes, y mientras haya falta de ellos, e interés por leer sobre ellos, me parece que nunca faltarán.
Sobre lo otro que mencionas, me avergüenza admitirlo, pero no fue sino hasta fechas recientes que tuve conocimiento de Farmer y Newton, y toda la tradición que se derivó de ellos. Mi atracción por los pastiches y la mitología creativa tuvo otras fuentes. Algunas de ellas de mucho tiempo atrás.
De niño me dije incontables veces: “¿No sería genial que alguien hiciera una película en la que los Gremlins y las bolas de pelos carnívoras de Critters sembraran el caos en alguna ciudad, o una película en la que Darth Vader despachara Xenomorfos con su sable de luz, o una en la que los Cazafantasmas hicieran frente a los Cenobitas de Hellraising?”.
La semilla ya estaba allí, pero tiempo no estaba dado aún.
Debe ser un gran placer reunir a los personajes de todos los tiempos en una misma historia…
Es una auténtica gozada, aunque también puede ser endiabladamente complicado y conlleva una gran responsabilidad. Sobre todo porque debe haber respeto, y cariño, mucho cariño, hacia las fuentes originales.
… siempre que se sepa hacer
Si bien la mitología creativa nos dice que todos los universos de la ficción confluyen en uno mismo y por ello cualquier cosa es posible, hay que saber justificar las cosas, o al menos así me parece a mí. No se trata de meter personajes o situaciones tan sólo por cubrir una cuota de guiños o referencias, hay que darles un propósito, un lugar digno en nuestras tramas, de lo contrario más nos vale no involucrarlos.
A usted no parece costarle
Por mencionar un ejemplo, en mi historia “La verdad sobre la desaparición de Alice L”, se encuentran elementos de universos creados por al menos 5 escritores distintos. Darle coherencia y atractivo a un argumento asentado sobre esos cimientos fue una labor bastante complicada, pero muy satisfactoria, tanto así que se trata de una mis historias favoritas, de la que he recibido muy buenas opiniones por parte de los lectores.
En Su última carcajada utiliza el índice onomástico como un elemento narrativo más, es difícil no detectar la influencia de Alberto López Aroca
Como mencioné líneas más arriba, las fuentes que me llevaron a escribir pastiches y mitología creativa fueron varias, la principal fue, sin lugar a dudas, Alberto.
¿Cómo llegó a su obra?
Es una historia bastante curiosa. Soy un gran aficionado a Lovecraft y los Mitos de Cthulhu, y siempre busco en la red cualquier material relacionado con esos temas. En una ocasión di con una historia llamada Estudio en Esmeralda, que es un magnífico pastiche de Sherlock Holmes ambientado en el mundo de los Mitos de Cthulhu. Por razones que desconozco, no se mencionaba al autor en la versión del relato que leí, pero como lo disfruté tanto me di a la tarea de rastrearlo para buscar más obras suyas. De esa forma descubrí el nombre de Alberto López Aroca, escritor español especialista en Holmes, quien además de haber firmado una historia llamada Estudio en Esmeralda, se encontraba en aquel entonces dándole las pinceladas finales a una novela con el sugerente título de Necronomicón Z.
Le encontró
Con esos antecedentes, era evidente que había encontrado a quien buscaba. Pero no. En realidad, al autor que buscaba era nada menos que Neil Gaiman, que también escribió una obra titulada Estudio en Esmeralda, y el rastro que me condujo hasta Alberto una gran coincidencia. Tal como lo dijo en una ocasión el detective de Baker Street: “No hay nada más engañoso que un hecho evidente”. Lección aprendida, maestro.
Además, Alberto es mejor que Gaiman
Si, al final esa confusión de identidades tuvo un desenlace feliz, pues me llevó a leer las obras de Alberto, que son magníficas cátedras de escritura y mitología creativa, y me brindó el último empujón que necesitaba para realizar las mías. Hoy en día, además de ser un maestro y consejero, considero a Alberto López Aroca como un gran amigo, con quien tengo el enormísimo placer de compartir páginas en el tercer número de la revista Ulthar, de la que es creador, editor y principal instigador.
La novela está plagada de reveladores guiños como, por ejemplo, a los trífidos de John Wyndham…
El día de los trífidos es una de mis novelas favoritas y los trífidos me parecen unos monstruos fascinantes. Me resulta complicado definir por qué me resultan tan atractivos, pero en efecto algo tienen, ya que no soy el primero, y probablemente no el último, en tomarlos prestados para aderezar una historia.
… Una raíz conocida como el pie del diablo
En todas las “Sagradas Escrituras”, me parece que no hay homicidios más macabros ni siniestros que los perpetrados por los efluvios de esta exótica raíz africana. No había manera de que la dejara fuera de mi historia.
La banda sonora de la novela sería la música de Erich Zann
Esa no es sólo una de mis historias preferidas, también es una genial canallada de Lovecraft. ¿Quién era Zann en realidad? ¿Dónde aprendió a tocar de aquella manera? ¿De dónde o de quién provenía aquella otra música? ¿Qué contenían aquellas páginas que se perdieron para siempre en el clímax de la historia? …

Erich Zann es un personaje demasiado importante como para dejarlo en el olvido.
Hay tres soldados que responden a los nombres de Lestrade, Closeau y Hitch
Una pequeña artimaña woldnewtoniana, excepto por el tercer miembro, de quien sabemos sobrevivió a la guerra para dedicarse con éxito a contar historias en el celuloide. No hay mucho más que decir sobre ellos, excepto que eran nombres que tenían que participar en el conflicto.
Un personaje llamado Lacroix (militar, valiente, voluntarioso, un hombre de acción, impulsivo) es el Watson de su Holmes…
Desde un principio supe que “Su última carcajada” sería una historia de Holmes, pero Watson no podía narrarla. Brevemente consideré a Mycroft, pero tampoco cubría el perfil. La historia necesitaba de un narrador que hubiera estado presente en los hechos, que los viviera de primera mano. En pocas palabras, un hombre de acción. La decisión de que fuera francés obedeció a la necesidad de crear todo el contraste posible frente a Holmes. Los lectores podrán juzgar mejor que yo si tuve éxito o no en la empresa.
De hecho, todo lo anterior recuerda a los 12 del patíbulo
Ahora que lo mencionas, sí, es verdad. Vi esa película hace muchos años, y tengo muy buenos recuerdos de ella. No la tenía en mente cuando escribí mi historia, al menos no conscientemente, sin embargo, salvando las distancias, me parece una comparación justa.
Le cito “¿Alguien duda de que Holmes no exista?”
¿Es que todavía hay quienes dudan de que Sherlock Holmes fue una persona real? (risas)
(risas) Por cierto, ¿Cuándo se conocieron?
No recuerdo cuándo fue mi primer acercamiento con el personaje. Supongo que fue, como con muchos otros, a través del cine o la televisión. Y aunque tenía algunas nociones sobre él, varias de ellas anticanónicas, nunca le presté demasiada atención. De hecho, el primer libro que pasó a formar parte de mi biblioteca fue Charlie Marlow y la rata gigante de Sumatra, de Alberto López Aroca.
No es mal libro por así decirlo
Bastó la lectura de esa muy recomendable obra para que me enamorara del personaje y su mundo. Tanto así, que al día de hoy mi colección holmesiana sólo se encuentra por detrás de la lovecraftiana. Algo que se refleja también en mi producción literaria que se centra, en su mayoría, en estos dos temas.
Por cierto, la cara de su Holmes es la de Basil Rathbone…
Esa ilustración hace que la portada de Su última carcajada sea una de mis favoritas y el que su autor, Fernando Vicente, le diera ese aspecto, fue un gran detalle.
A propósito de Rathbone, creo que es justo decir que conozco muy pocas encarnaciones cinematográficas del detective. Ian McKellen, Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch y Nicholas Rowe son los únicos que me resultan familiares. Sobre cuál de esas encarnaciones es la mejor, no me siento capaz de emitir un juicio, pues todas ellas son disfrutables, en qué medida dependerá del espectador, si se les brinda la oportunidad.
Los Holmes modernos…
Del Holmes de Downey Jr me gusta la recreación del Londres victoriano. Del de McKellen su interpretación del personaje por mostrarlo vulnerable y en el ocaso de sus días, lo que nos recuerda la humanidad del personaje. De la serie de la BBC me agrada la interpretación de las historias del canon y el retrato de Londres que se vio en el especial de La esposa abominable. De El joven Sherlock Holmes (El misterio de la pirámide) me agrada el argumento y los efectos especiales, cómo olvidar aquella escena del vitral.
¿Y las “variantes”?
Dos me parecen muy reseñables. El doctor House, de la serie homónima y cuyos paralelismos con Sherlock me parece ocioso enumerar, y Basil de la calle Baker de la entrañable animación de Disney Policías y ratones (Basil el ratón superdetective).
Antes ha nombrado La desaparición de Alice Lidell, narración en la que se enfrenta como autor a lo que rodea a esa fascinante niña que cruza espejos como portales de mundos alternativos…
Como a muchos otros holmesianos, me resultan fascinantes los famosos tres casos sin solución que se mencionan en la aventura del Puente Thor: la imposible desaparición de James Phillimore, la locura de Isadora Persano y la no menos misteriosa desaparición del cutter Alice.
Echando mano de la mitología creativa y tirando de algunos hilos, las piezas comenzaron a encajar entre sí y cuando me di cuenta, tenía a Holmes y Watson frente a un peculiar espejo. El resto, como se suele decir, es historia. Una entretenida, me gusta pensar.
En un momento de la novela dice “El mundo se me desdibujaba como una continua serie de paisajes de irrealidad” …
Eso es algo que en una historia de Sherlock Holmes podría resultar chocante, en especial para quienes hacen del personaje el adalid de la racionalidad fría y ascética. Una postura que me resulta insostenible e incompatible con la personalidad del personaje.

Existe el prejuicio de que en todas las historias de Holmes debe primar siempre la racionalidad y una explicación lógica de los acontecimientos, lo que no tiene nada de malo siempre y cuando no se convierta en algo que corte la imaginación de los autores.
La muy popular unión de Sherlock Holmes & Cthulhu no ha dejado de ser polémica…
Mezclar el mundo de Sherlock Holmes con otros, como el de los Mitos de Cthulhu, es una idea muy atractiva, que si no es bien trabajada puede llevar al desastre, como ocurre con varios de los relatos que componen la antología Sombras sobre Baker Street, pero que también puede legarnos obras como La sombra de Pan, de Sergio J. Monreal o la ya citada Charlie Marlow y la rata gigante de Sumatra. Lo reitero una vez más. Este tipo de labor necesita respeto y cariño por las fuentes. No hay de otra.
Nunca evita que trasluzca su inacabable amor a Lovecraft…
Siempre que el argumento así me lo permite, intento hacer una referencia o guiño a Lovecraft y su obra, la cual admiro mucho desde que cayera en mis manos una edición de bolsillo de La llamada de Cthulhu. En ese aspecto me considero muy afortunado, pues casi todas esas historias han sido del agrado de los editores y se han publicado.
En el caso concreto de La verdad sobre la desaparición de Alice L, el universo lovecraftiano encajó junto con las otras piezas de forma tan armónica que no había manera de que quedara fuera. Y no es que eso pasara por mi mente alguna vez.
Resolver los casos irresueltos y outré del Canon fue un gustazo…
Al menos lo intenté. El grado de éxito de esta tentativa le toca juzgarlo a los lectores. En lo que a mí respecta, tal como ya lo mencioné líneas más arriba, me siento bastante satisfecho.
En La aventura del barril de aceitunas narra una aventura más clásica; mas, si quiere, ortodoxa.
Tras Su última carcajada y La verdad sobre la desaparición de Alice L., quise hacer algo más cercano al Canon, una historia más convencional. Así que me di a la tarea de investigar, a retomar datos de aquí y de allá y, como sucedió en las otras historias, las cosas comenzaron a encajar casi por sí solas. Lo que no significa que no me topara con algunos obstáculos para escribir el relato. Sólo por mencionar algo, desde un principio quería que la historia se llamara La aventura del barril de aceitunas, aunque definir el papel que jugara dicho barril fue algo que tuve que meditar durante un buen tiempo.
Utiliza como narrador a ese inaprensible personaje que es Ambrose Bierce
Quien fue todo un personaje en la vida real. Ya que la historia de La aventura del barril de aceitunas ocurre en una época en la que Watson no forma parte de la vida de Holmes, requería de otro narrador que fuera el responsable de dar a conocer la historia. Barajé varias posibilidades, incluyendo dejar que el mismo Holmes se encargara de contar los eventos. pero al final me decanté por Bierce, quien no tardó en convertirse en un maravillo trasunto del buen doctor.
Sus libros prestan un cuidado especial a la edición y son toda una declaración de principios, un homenaje a la cultura popular y, un elemento, narrativo más.
He tenido la oportunidad de trabajar con editoriales maravillosas, para las que los libros, los físicos sobre todo, son objetos con valor por sí mismos. Y yo no podría estar más de acuerdo con ello. El e- book tiene sus ventajas, eso nadie lo duda, pero carece del encanto que sólo se consigue con papel y tinta.
Contar con la gente de Pulpture ayuda…
Pulpture hace una labor impecable con sus libros, dotándolos de personalidad y detalles. Y podría decir más al respecto, pero qué mejor que dejar que los lectores descubran esto por su cuenta.
Démosles algunas pistas. Su última carcajada es todo un homenaje a los bolsilibros y los Cinco pastiches victorianos a los penny dreadful .
En lo que toca a las portadas, mi participación únicamente se limitó a aprobarlas, lo que no fue nada difícil dada la calidad de las mismas. Por ejemplo, las portadas de los penny dreadful de Pulpture me gustan mucho, con ese estilo mitad retro, mitad Mike Mignola que encaja a la perfección con las historias que componen esa colección.
